Africa, my Africa
Africa of proud warriors in the ancestral savannah
Africa of whom my grand mother sings
Is this you.....
Those lines open a certain great poem that has been lingering in my mind for long. The persona addresses Africa as if its human (apostrophe) and I always grow goose pimps when I read it. It shows our pride, our love, our passion, our desire, our enthusiasm. The ability to resist any change or trials. And to an extent we have done so BUT for all the resistance, we need to embrace ICT. I should add ICT in Teaching and Learning. But why do we take long to adopt and adapt??? We need to change, that is the TRUTH!
I took long to buy a smart phone, not that i did not have money but was still under the umbrella of resistance. When I got one, I could not imagine how much I had missed. But we still have many a person without them. We need to face the TRUTH!
Coming to Agakhan University IED Dar es Salaam has permanently opened my eyes, every bit of it. Looking at how ICT has changed every one is another poem to write. From day one Geoff, Internet, Projectors, Video conference we all thought that they have borrowed gadgets for the day but alas, here was really transformation! Slowly not 'fast',we began changing, from note books to buying laptops, blended learning, goggling now blogging Oh what a journey!. But some of us have failed to change. And the TRUTH is they need to but still cherish our African notion of Resitance.
This is a true story about the 'TRUTH', its hardly a month old. We really need to embrace ICT.
During the second week of this course, I received news that teachers had been transferred in mother Uganda. That is the practice annually, but there is this geography gifted teacher who was leaving a station after 28 years of great success! I called to school and the mood was gloomy! Everyone was saying she is irreplaceable and I agree but my colleagues lack exposure. In my thoughts I wondered what could be done to avoid such a scenario again. That is when I remebered ICT in teaching. If we had recoreded this lady's lessons over the year, we would have lots of clips each topic and fieldwork.
I sent word back home but of course its was late. She was going. The TRUTH is that we need to CHANGE! How quick or slow is up to you but you need to change. That is the TRUTH!
be very specific to what you want to address. How ICT will help you in your life?
ReplyDeleteWambura, I am not quite sure you understood my article well. Please a little re-reading may be of great help to you. RE-read.
DeleteLet's think about the use of ICT in teaching of language literacies. Dont' you think it will be the most exciting experience? I bet you try this at home.
ReplyDeleteQuraishy,
ReplyDeleteI would like to assure you that the Geography teacher whose departure has left the whole school in tears will soon be forgotten if the teacher who is to step into her shoes starts using PowerPoint to teach Geography. Of course that will work if she had not used it. Hence use of ICT could be a means to forget the past and embrace change.
We are the foundation of change for the next generation. LQ many times we want to make a difference in our communities but i guess we are held back because we fear venturing out and discovering. Now that you are knowledgeable enlighten those who are still lagging behind
ReplyDeletei was in the same fear of embracing it, but i see how much change it has brought to us!! and Thats the truth :) its starts from me and you
Deletegood piece Junior Ng'...
I appreciate your concern. People who don't have knowledge of ICT will soon fail to communicate with the youth. Eventually they will fail to fit in society.
ReplyDeleteIneed it is a journey that we are still walking since ICT IS dinamic.
